How to Run Scandisk
  • Double click on My Computer
  • Right-click on the drive to scan (C:)
  • Click on Properties
  • Click on the Tools tab
  • Click on Check Now
Note: Scandisk can take quite a bit of time (up to several hours, depending on the size and speed of the disk, number and size of files, and whether or not errors are found on the disk).

Windows 9X/Me Note: You should close all programs prior to starting the scan.   (You can hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to close any unecessary applications -- select the program and hit End Task).

Windows 2000 & Windows XP Note: You will be presented with "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" options.   You should check both options and click Start.

Windows 2000 & Windows XP Note: You will not be able to scan the disk while Windows is running.   Windows will give you the option to "schedule the check" to occur on the next boot up.   You should select Yes and reboot your computer to begin the scan.
